How do I connect to the internet on WINDOWS 8 Developer Preview?
I built a PC and installed Windows 8 developer preview on it as the main and only OS and ever since then I have had issues connecting to the internet. Most of the time it cannot find my network at all or sometimes it connects but web pages wont load or internet videos wont play.
Forgot to mention that I have a wireless network card so I dont have an ethernet cable hooked up to it. Also, drivers are up to date.
Answer: The problem may be something physical rather than OS related since you can occasionally get to the Internet. Check your Ethernet cable for a bad connection at either end and replace it if possible.
Do you have an ASUS motherboard by any chance? They have a ROM program that runs at startup called Express Gate which includes a web browser. See if that works better.
It may also be driver related. Since you built the computer the motherboard should include all the drivers but they may be old. Try updating them.

How do I restore original factory settings after installing WINDOWS 8 ?
I installed Windows 8 nut things are not working properly. I would like to shift back to windows 7 on my Sony Vaio. But how do I restore original factory settings ? I cannot find the Vaio central option in the start menu.
Answer: Now your in very deep hot water, you didn't read the Windows 8 instruction that told you NOT to install it on a working system that is used daily on another operating system, NOT only can't you restore the original factory settings back to windows 7, Because you have wiped out the hidden partition that had the Vaio central restore hardware drivers and the windows 7 install files on it.
Now you will have to do one of two choices
Buy windows 7 install disk. Then find all the Vaio hardware drivers for windows 7, If you don't then windows 7 won't work either. Plus the fact you will have no application software packages to run on windows 7 anyway.
The best thing to do. Which I would advise you to do, is install a free alternative operating system on your Vaio, It will find all your hardware drivers, you will get all the application software you need free, the operating system is up to date, December 2011.

windows 7 has been out for a couple of years now and ive heard a lot of talk about Windows 8, however all the talk seems to coincide with tablets. therefore is Windows 8 just an OS or tablets/phones/etc or is it a new OS for PCs as well.
is upgrading to it mandatory or will win7 be practical for several more years to come?
Answer: It's a desktop operating system that is also designed to work on tablets. There is never a mandate to upgrade to the most recent version of Windows...it's always been optional. I personally won't be buying for quite some time unless there are some big new features it has over Windows 7. To my knowledge, Windows 8 is not designed to run on smartphones, so WP7 will still be around. The only reason you hear so much about Windows 8 and tablets is that Windows 8 will be the first operating system of its kind to work across both tablets and normal desktop/laptop machines in a unified fashion.

I have a very nice computer at home that i would like to switch to Windows 8. The only reason that I am not doing so is that minecraft does not work on Windows 8. I would like to know if there is a workaround for this. Please do not give me an answer if you have not tested it.

Answer: I actually have a PC that is loaded with Windows 8 (Alpha stage), I've tried Minecraft on it and it crashes a lot, you could probably get a a good two minutes of gameplay (not enough to mine diamond).

What happens to my files upon installing WINDOWS 8 Preview?
I downloaded Windows 8 64 bit Developer Preview, to test it out on my XP before I send it to re-installation. Now, I have a dilemma before installing it - does it erase any of my files I had on XP before installing 8? And if it doesnt, are they in the same places they were before?
Also, one more question. Im installing 64 bit W8 on 32 bit XP. Will that work?

How to swich from WINDOWS 8 back to windows 7?
I installed Windows 8 but i would like to go back to using windows 7. When i boot my computer it doesnt give me an OS option it just loads Windows 8. Please help!
Im not sure if I made a partition or not. I installed it on a disk then installed the disk onto my computer. Can i do a system restore? Will that work?
Answer: If you installed it on a separate hard drive and installed the hard drive then yes reinsert the windows 7 hard drive.
If you installed 8 over 7 then no your limited in options. Your only recourse is to hope easy transfer is intact so you can save "some of your files" user profile etc.. This will not save programs so you will have to reinstall them after you go back to windows 7.
Prior to doing this back up anything of value to an external source. Book marks, contacts,program installers, Office documents and keys if you have them. Anything you deem remotely important as a fresh install of 7 will wipe them all.
I can't urge this enough anyone wanting to use an upgrade install of Windows 8. Should have two partitions and download Easus todo free home version to create a 0 day "byte by byte" full disk image on a separate partition and boot able PE CD prior to installing Windows 8 in upgrade mode.
If this had been done, it would be a simple matter of inserting and booting the PE disk and restoring to 7 from your created disk image on a separate partition "roughly a 25 minute procedure " that would have restored "EVERYTHING" files, installed programs, etc..
Unfortunately this is hindsight for you but if anyone else peeks this prior to doing an upgrade install then mission accomplished.

How do I switch internet explorer 10 from desktop to full screen in WINDOWS 8 ?
Im using Windows 8 developer edition and need to know how to switch from desktop to full screen (on the new type of Windows 8 screen).

Answer: If you want to use the full screen "touch" version of IE, you need to go back into the Metro start menu and open IE there. If you do it from the desktop it will open the desktop version.

Answer: Chances are it will cost the same or only cost $50 extra. In my experience when an OS upgrade becomes available you don't see a price increase. Prices will increase generally only because of hardware changes.

Do you think WINDOWS 8 will be as revolutionary as windows 95?
I mean, windows 95 introduced the desktop, and every windows release after that has been based on that simple but revolutionary design. Then, a few weeks ago, im watching tv and they show the Windows 8 interface. I know I sound like people sounded with vista( I hate change), but in your opinion, Will the new metro interface be as revolutionary as the windows 95 interface was?
Answer: The new Metro interface SUCKS. Hard.
Thankfully it can be disabled, revealing what is
basically a tweaked version of Windows 7.
Oh, and the new Start menu isn't worth a gill of pee.

How to revert back my WINDOWS 8 developers preview?
It seems that because of the default C:\ drive installation of the Windows 8 developer preview, I must have upgraded my Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 8. I want to revert back. Please suggest me something to do.
Answer: This is your only option and its really not a fix but you can salvage some of your files etc.
As to date there is no rollback but since you appear to have upgraded this is worth a try.
Navigate to system tools hopefully the developers preview left the Windows easy transfer intact.
Back up your important files to an external source thumb drive hard drive etc using easy transfer.
Remove the back up media and reboot. Either use restore options or windows 7 dvd to reinstall.
Plugin your external device open up Easy transfer and restore files.
Things you will need to do create a backup of bookmarks from your web browser of choice and place it in your documents. anything you want to keep pics notes etc locate them all in one place this will make finding them easier after you restore.
This will not transfer programs over they will be lost after you reinstall 7 take inventory of what your running utilities and programs and try to make the best of a bad situation. If this is an OEM HP Dell etc your basic utility programs will be available on their support site. webcam software cyberlink etc. If you purchased an office key on line make note of it as well. If you purchased Norton now is a nice opportunity to kiss it goodbye it's useless anyway.
I'm going to state the following and this is a message to anyone wanting to try the Windows 8 Beta.
Do not do it unless you familiarize yourself with Disk imaging software "Easus is free and if it were installed would have fixed this for you"...or disk tools under admin tools in windows 7 shrink the Windows 7 volume by 42,000 "roughly 40gb format the new 40 gb partition and make it active.
Do not choose the upgrade installation "EVER" Boot from the Windows 8 disk choose clean install and install it to the 40gb drive you created. You'll now be taken to a dual boot screen at start up asking which one you want to run :).
Doing this also makes the uninstall of 8 a lot easier and less damaging as your Windows 7 install will remain intact. .
