Buying an idTGV ticket for someone else?
My friend is going to France in a few days. She needed a train ticket from Paris to Nice. We found an idTGV fare (not the normal TGV ticket but rather the budget online one) on the www.voyages-sncf.com site. My friends credit card didnt work, though, because of a problem with her credit card company. So I bought it on my credit card. Her ticket is the kind you print out at home.
Then I realized that maybe she would have to present my credit card upon boarding the train. I wasnt sure from the website whether this was the case, or whether showing the printed receipt was good enough. My French is not very good and I couldnt scan the website well enough to find this information. We emailed their customer service but who knows if they understand English or will get back to us in time before she leaves.
Can someone let me know if what we did was okay? Or are we going to have to change the transaction to her credit card somehow? Thanks.
Answer: i can speak perfectly french and will check the conditions on the website.
Ok, there are no problem, as long as it is her name on the ticket. She will not be asked your credit card. Her printed ticket is sufficient.
I'm french.

night train expensive from Paris to Frankfurt?
We need to get from Paris to Frankfurt on Oct 3/4. I checked http://www.tgv-europe.com/en/home/ and http://www.voyages-sncf.com which said itd be euro 123 or close to $180 usd.
They seem to be really expensive though it may be due to the weak dollar. Any other websites that we can check for better rate? Any bus we can take that may be cheaper? Thanks!
Answer: There is no direct night train from Paris to Frankfurt, since the travel duration of 4 hours does not make it feasible to offer a night connection.
Using the City-Night Liner from Paris Est (9.45pm) to Karlsruhe (4.55am), you would need an additional train ticket from Karlsruhe (5.59am) to Frankfurt (7.08am). The cheap night liner tickets are already sold out, so you only have the choice of using a couchette which is offered for 95 € or 99 € (6 or 4 berth) plus the additional ticket Karlsruhe - Frankfurt for 39 €.
Options are using an evening train on October, 3rd, depart Paris Est at 7:05pm to arrice at Frankfurt 10:58pm for 59 € or early morning trains on 4th October, departing 6.58am or 9.09am, arriving at Frankfurt 10.58am or 12.58am, still offered for 49 €. Those prices however are limited and usually sold out quickly, as Willeke already mentioned before. Regular fare would be 99 € for the direct ICE connection or 110 € on the TGV via Karlsruhe
Another option is to use the night bus, departing Paris Gare Int. de Paris-Gallieni; Av. Gen.de Gaulle "Bagnolet" at 9.00pm to arrive Frankfurt at 6.00am. Regular fare for adults (26 and over) is 45 €, for jevenils 42 €, and special early booking offers at 35 €.

Answer: Discovery 12-25 isn't a card need, it is the name of the fare. All you should need to use it is a photo ID with your birth date on it proving that you are under 26.
You can pre book a ticket and then pay for it at the station at automatic ticket machine at the station. You will have pay before a due date, when I looked at the site it showed the due date as 28/5, I am not sure if it is always a week for the due date or not but it does give you an email that you can contact them if you would like to find out. http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvSendMail2?_LANG=UK&type_mail=1&theme=2

what they dont want you to know when you book euro trains tgv, voyages-sncf?
why do they charge more if you say you are not european? how to get around that?
Answer: I have booked tickets from the French version of the French website while not in France, if you can pick up your tickets in France before traveling (like between when you get off the plane and into the train,) you can just select the 'collect in France' option.
Here is a guide how to use the site, so google translate will be a secondary help:
http://www.seat61.com/France-trains.htm#How to use voyages-sncf.com
If the direct link does not work, try going to this page:
http://www.seat61.com/France.htm
In the top bit of the main text there is a line about buying rail tickets in ... and the last there is direct from SNCF, follow the instructions provided and it will not be too hard.

What can I do in Nice, France, on a Monday?
Im planning a free & easy trip where Ill be leaving Paris for Nice on Sunday. But read that on Mondays all the markets and stores are closed in Nice. If I keep to the original plan of taking the TGV from Paris in the morning and arriving Nice on Sunday afternoon, what can I do in Nice upon arrival and on Monday? Or should I spend Sunday in Paris and use Monday for the Paris-Nice travel time?
Original plan was to spend 2 nights in Nice - on the day of arrival, visit the Promenade des Anglais and Place Massena. The next day, go to the Castle Hill (Colline du Chateau) and walk around Nice Old Town (Vieille Ville). Shop along Avenue Jean Medec and probably re-visit Promenade des Anglais in the evening. Next morning leave Nice for Milan.
Found an overnight Paris-Nice train schedule on www.voyages-sncf.com - is there a room to sleep in or well be sleeping on our seats?
Also, when doing searches on www.voyages-sncf.com, it returns results showing TGV and iDTGV. Whats the difference between these 2?
Answer: DO visit the old town! it is so beautiful and colourful!
on Cours Saleya, there is a flower market everyday, and you can enjoy a drink on a sunny terrace.... Go taste "Socca", a thick pancake made with chickpea flour at "René Socca", it is the best in town.

Answer: if you loock at the rail europe site, you can see it all in english. There is also a 0870 number you can ring and book your ticket if your not sure, I did it last year myself, was very easy, they sent the ticket within a couple of days, good luck. the TGV site is awful, I had no end of problems with it.

How come Rail Tickets are less expensive on French speaking websites than on English speaking websites?
I have often heard that if you speak French you can get rail tickets for less money when traveling in France. So I tried booking on http://www.voyages-sncf.com and I got all the way to the "checkout" page and it wouldnt accept my payment information, possibly because I do not have a European billing address? So I went to the English website and the exact same trains and times were almost double the price. Obviously I know the French website used Euros and the English version used USD, but where can I go to find the same price that the French get on their rail tickets?
Answer: Voyages-sncf is the French national railway website and many of the tickets on offer, especially if you're buying 90 days in advance, are often heavily discounted. When you chose the English page, you were probably redirected to a site such as USA RailEurope which is a commercial company and charges the full price for train tickets.
When booking on voyages-sncf you will be given the option of choosing a country in which to receive tickets - always choose France for this. You can then complete your booking, pay for the tickets, and often print out the ticket at home. If the print at home option is not available, just print out the receipt with the travel details and booking number, and take to any train station in France to collect your tickets.
I'm in Australia and buy train tickets through voyages-sncf each time i visit France, and have never had any problems with paying for the tickets.

Answer: If you are going to thumb every one down why ask? If it is not you then why would any one thumb them all down when they are trying to help them?
I know on weekends in Germany you can travel with a mutlipassenger ticket and it is real inexpensive and would at least take you from the German border to your destination for real cheap like probably less than 80 euro maybe, I am not sure with out looking up the rates. Now can you get to the German border with 100 Euro? Can you maybe pay a friend to drive you to the border?
I do not know the cost of trains in France so I do not know if you have these multi user tickets as they do on the weekends.
That is one way to do it. Another would be if you rode a motor bike, they get great gas mileage and you could ride there in a day or two max depending on your personal driving endurance. You would of course have to own a motor bike.
Or is there a bus that you can take to the German border then get a mutli pass?
I would take the advice of either some of the Germans and or the French who know their rail and travel system best.

Missed train in France due to EasyJet delay.. with rail insurance??what to do?
Hi there
My bf was flying from Liverpool to Paris and then getting the train down to Lyon to visit me but the EasyJet flight was delayed by about 4 or 5 hours and so he missed his train to Lyon. We were worried about a delay so booked the train for nearly 2 hours after landing but this doesnt seem to have been enough safety time!!
He therefore had to pay 80 euro for a new ticket at Paris and we were wondering if there is any way EasyJet reimburse this type of thing for their delays. He bought some insurance for a pound off the Voyages SNCF website with the original ticket but Im not sure if this covers him!!
Any ideas??
Thanks :) xox
Answer: The SNCF insurance would be to cover any delays with the train. It is in no way connected with flight delays, so don't think you'll have any luck with that as the delay wasn't SNCFs fault.
Next time get flight as well as train insurance, or a full travel insurance policy.

Trains in Italy?
OK, so Im embarking on a long (4 months) journey through Europe in a couple of weeks and obviously will be taking a lot of trains. One thing Ive made clear to myself is that Eurail, even with its passes is horribly overpriced, compared to domestic ticket prices.
As far as France goes, I know I can get cheap tickets via voyages-sncf.fr - those tickets are at domestic prices, which means that even for the longest distances, they are usually under 50 euros, most of them are under 25.
However, Ill be starting out in Italy. SNCF has reasonable prices for their trains as well, but Im thinking that it would be more sensible to buy train tickets right there on the spot. However, I speak 0 Italian and I would prefer to take late-night trains so that I wouldnt have to pay for the nights stay in a hotel. Would it be troublesome to get such tickets there? Should I order the tickets on SNCF (for example the price to go from Venice to Nice on SNCF is 55 euros) or should I not worry about it?
Answer: Here is the website (in English) of the Italian railways system (Trenitalia).
http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html
There are timetables and any kind of information. Overnight trains are also quoted in the schedule.Tickets can be bought on line but also at the Italian stations.I've no idea about possibility to buy tickets covering international routes but I guess you can do that too. Only be careful about the period since Italian trains can be overcrowded in specific times of the year (Xmas and Easter holidays , summer holidays late July/early August and also in correspondence of the 'bridges' for multiple festive days all over the year, etc. Also in trains like Eurostar advanced reservation of the seat it's absolutely mandatory.
Have a nice long journey through Europe.

Which one is better - France Rail Pass, or the SNCF card?
I am planning to travel to France this summer, and Im going through the rail ticket options. I found 2 interesting options:
1. www.raileurope.com, providing a France pass which gives 3 days of unlimited travel within France
2. www.voyages-sncf.com, providing a rail card, with discounts of 25%, and up to 50% in non-peak hours.
I am eligible for the 18-25 Youth pass, and I plan to travel from Paris to Provence, and within Provence. Which one would be cheaper?
Answer: When I was living in France I had a carte 12-25 (youth card) from the SNCF since I made trips across France during the holidays. I think this pass is a good option because it's valid for a full year and you can use it as much as you want in that period of time (summer for you). You aren't going to want to take the train that much in a couple concentrated days as riding the train takes up a good junk of your day and zaps your energy.
I think once you use up the days from the raileurope pass it will be more of a pain to travel whereas each trip is cheaper and therefore you may to travel more with the carte 12-25.
your best bet though if you want to be sure you're making the right economical decision is to write out the exact trips you want to do and then what trips are optional and do a cost benefit analysis of each :-)

Train from Paris to Nice?
I searched www.voyages-sncf.com and found an overnight Paris-Nice train schedule. For such overnight journeys, is there a room to sleep in or well be sleeping on our seats?
Also, when doing searches on www.voyages-sncf.com, it returns results showing TGV and iDTGV. Whats the difference between these 2?
Answer: For overnight trains you have a choice of just seat / "couchette" = seat transformed in bunk beds (basic sheet and plaid provided) / "wagon-lit" = similar to beds in a cruise boat cabin.
TGV and iDTGV run at the same speed.
iDTGV are less comfortable, tickets are much cheaper, sold only on the internet and non-refundable.
