Answer: Unicode supplies the Devangari Om ( http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/0950/index.htm ), the Gujarati Om ( http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/0ad0/index.htm ), and the Tibetan Syllable Om ( http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/0f00/index.htm ). How you type them depends first on your operating system, whether it is Microsoft Windows, or Macintosh, or Linux, or sOmething else. First, you need Unicode fonts that have the character or characters. If you can see ॐ, ૐ, and ༀ then you are fine there. Otherwise use the web pages that I referenced to get appropriate fonts. As to typing these, operating systems cOme with various virtual keyboards you can install to type characters in various languages. I have an old Olympus Om 10fc and would like to use the old lenses since I have about 5 on a new Olympus digital SLR camera. What kind of Olympus camera would you recOmmend?
Answer: You can do that with any of the Olympus Digital SLR cameras using a simple adapter (Olympus sells the adapter for about $100 U.S. but you can get good ones frOm third party manufactures for between $20~$50). I have both types and would not pay the difference for the Olympus brand again). In theory they should work with Panasonic and Leica Four/Thirds cameras as well but I have not tried either of them (because I am not rich enough to own all three brands). Be aware that the focal length will be effectively doubled, the lenses will require manual focusing and "stop down" metering in aperture priority mode and there are limitations on the metering modes that will work. Olympus recOmmends a very narrow range of aperture settings but I find that Om the lenses work well at most settings. There are also adapters with an electronic "focus confirmation" sensor that will provide an electronic connection to the auto-focus mechanisms on Oly cameras, this causes the audible/visible focus confirmation signal to activate when you have achieved best focus. I have not used any of these and have heard mixed reviews where sOme people loved them and others hated them. This can be important because the viewfinders on DSLR cameras are not traditional ground glass screens like those frOm manual focusing film cameras but rather are clear screens with focus points visible in the viewfinder. The ground glass style is considered unnecessary because of the auto focus capability.

is the olympus OM-1 a good camera to start with?

Ive been interested in photography and i found an ad for an olympus Om-1 for 300 dollars with two lenses and other accessories. I dont know much about cameras. Is this a good start?
Answer: Hi, The Om1 camera is a classic, high quality camera that is still highly desired/valued by both film shooters and camera collectors but the price you are quoting would be almost impossible to evaluate without much more detailed information. For example: Is it a chrOme or black body? Does it include the flash shoe? What lenses are included? Brand, focal length & maximum aperture are critical. (Olympus lenses are identified with the name Zuiko and are, in general, excellent optics) What accessories are included? If you go online and check the prices of items based on these features you will have sOme idea of what price you should be paying. Here is a link to one of the largest used equipment dealers in the world and they have extensive listings for Om1 cameras and accessories. Keep in mind that they have service technicians and extensive test/repair facilities so they can charge a premium price for their offerings. And, in my experience and what I have heard frOm others, they are VERY CONSERVATIVE in the ratings of their products so even their Bargain/Ugly rated products are in pretty good shape. http://www.keh.cOm/camera/format-35mm?s=1&bc=39 They currently have ~ Om-1 bodies going in the $50~$200 price range Om-1 with 50mm f/1.8 in the $80~$180 range Om-1 with 50mm f/1.4 in the $ Note that many of these are Om-1 MD (Motor Drive) models, which means they have a small square badge on the front of the body that says MD and an engagement socket on the bottOm to attach a motor drive or winder attachment. It should have a cover, similar to a battery cover, that protects the socket but they are often misplaced. It will be at the extreme end of the plate on the bottOm at the same end of the camera with the film advance lever. If the camera includes a second lens that alone may be worth a considerable amount (or not if it is one of the very cOmmonly sold moderate wide angle or telephotos or lower priced zoOm lenses). Any Zuiko lens with a focal length LESS than or EQUAL to 24mm and an f/2.0 aperture is highly prized and probably can be resold for at least the price you are being asked to pay for the kit! Other highly sought after Zuiko lenses include ~ 180mm f/2.8 $250~$350 28~48 f/4 zoOm $75~$150 35~105 f3.5~f4.5 zoOm $150 Winders and motor drives vary widely in price depending on manufacturer and style/type. An operational Olympus winder in good condition should fetch anywhere frOm $25~$125. Remember that these are primarily based on prices frOm dealers and represent premium prices. I am a Catholic. Yet, Ive always been interested in learning about other religions and things of that nature. Buddhism has always been one of great interest with me and I was wondering if it would be wrong for me to get a tattoo of the Om symbol.

Answer: Dear Old Rob has laid too much information on you. The probabilities are that the adjustments have already been made for the 1.5V SR44 battery, but if you are in doubt, take your camera to a camera store that does repairs and have them check it out. If it has not been changed, then don't worry about it. Wein makes a 1.35v Zinc/Air Cell that will work quite well. The Om 1 has the distinct advantage of nothing having to have a battery in it to operate for taking pictures. The battery only operates the light meter and with a little study, you can cOmpensate for the lack of a light meter by reading up on the phenOmenon of the SUNNY 16 RULE. Check ou the Sunny 16 Rule on Google and try it out.

How do you rewind your film in the Olympus OM-1 film camera?

I just purchased an Olympus Om-1 film camera, and Im through my first round of film, but I cant figure out how to rewind the film. Im new to film cameras, but even in looking through the owners manual I cant find anything about rewinding. Any help?
Answer: If after reading the manual, you still cannot figure it out, take the camera into a camera store and have them show you how to rewind and unload the film

Answer: In Buddhism it is used in mantras and dhāranis A deeper insight into this mystic symbol reveals that it is cOmposed of three syllables cOmbined into one, not like a physical mixture but more like a chemical cOmbination. Indeed in Sanskrit the vowel 'o' is constitutionally a diphthong cOmpound of a + u; hence Om is representatively written as AUM. Fittingly, the symbol of AUM consists of three curves (curves 1, 2, and 3), one semicircle (curve 4), and a dot. The large lower curve 1 symbolizes the waking state (jagrat), in this state the consciousness is turned outwards through the gates of the senses. The larger size signifies that this is the most cOmmon ('majority') state of the human consciousness. The upper curve 2 denotes the state of deep sleep (sushupti) or the unconscious state. This is a state where the sleeper desires nothing nor beholds any dream. The middle curve 3 (which lies between deep sleep and the waking state) signifies the dream state (swapna). In this state the consciousness of the individual is turned inwards, and the dreaming self beholds an enthralling view of the world behind the lids of the eyes. These are the three states of an individual's consciousness, and since Indian mystic thought believes the entire manifested reality to spring frOm this consciousness, these three curves therefore represent the entire physical phenOmenon. The dot signifies the fourth state of consciousness, known in Sanskrit as turiya. In this state the consciousness looks neither outwards nor inwards, nor the two together. It signifies the cOming to rest of all differentiated, relative existence This utterly quiet, peaceful and blissful state is the ultimate aim of all spiritual activity. This Absolute (non-relative) state illuminates the other three states. Finally, the semi circle symbolizes maya and separates the dot frOm the other three curves. Thus it is the illusion of maya that prevents us frOm the realization of this highest state of bliss. The semi circle is open at the top, and does not touch the dot. This means that this highest state is not affected by maya. Maya only affects the manifested phenOmenon. This effect is that of preventing the seeker frOm reaching his ultimate goal, the realization of the One, all-pervading, unmanifest, Absolute principle. In this manner, the form of Om represents both the unmanifest and the manifest, the noumenon and the phenOmenon. As a sacred sound also, the pronunciation of the three-syllabled AUM is open to a rich logical analysis. The first alphabet A is regarded as the primal sound, independent of cultural contexts. It is produced at the back of the open mouth, and is therefore said to include, and to be included in, every other sound produced by the human vocal organs. Indeed A is the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet. The open mouth of A moves toward the closure of M. Between is U, formed of the openness of A but shaped by the closing lips. Here it must be recalled that as interpreted in relation to the three curves, the three syllables making up AUM are susceptible to the same metaphorical decipherment. The dream state (symbolized by U), lies between the waking state (A) and the state of deep sleep (M). Indeed a dream is but the cOmpound of the consciousness of waking life shaped by the unconsciousness of sleep. AUM thus also encOmpasses within itself the cOmplete alphabet, since its utterance proceeds frOm the back of the mouth (A), travelling in between (U), and finally reaching the lips (M). Now all alphabets can be classified under various heads depending upon the area of the mouth frOm which they are uttered. The two ends between which the cOmplete alphabet oscillates are the back of the mouth to the lips; both embraced in the simple act of uttering of AUM. The last part of the sound AUM (the M) known as ma or makar, when pronounced makes the lips close. This is like locking the door to the outside world and instead reaching deep inside our own selves, in search for the Ultimate truth. But over and above the threefold nature of Om as a sacred sound is the invisible fourth dimension which cannot be distinguished by our sense organs restricted as they are to material observations. This fourth state is the unutterable, soundless silence that follows the uttering of Om. A quieting down of all the differentiated manifestations, i.e. a peaceful-blissful and non-dual state. Indeed this is the state symbolized by the dot in the traditional iconography of AUM.
