MARY POPPINS 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Buena Vista, Dec. 14) -- The pictures that affect us as children may not always draw the same response after weve developed that set of benchmarks we so confidently call good taste. Dont peer too closely at Walt Disneys 1964 Mary Poppins, or youll end up fixating on its problems, not least of which is its sluggish pacing. But if the sight of a phonily realistic, pre-David Lynch robin landing on Julie Andrewss finger helped make you what you are today, then the flaws in Mary Poppins wont matter. This two-disc set is brimming with bonus material, but none of it as valuable or pleasurable as the movie itself. Sections of Mary Poppins are brushed with feather strokes of wistfulness, a complicated emotion that kids often feel as keenly as adults do. The movies best sequences -- near the beginning, for example, when the wonderful Dick Van Dyke, as Marys beau Bert, senses a change in the wind as autumn approaches -- have an achingly joyous quality. Thats a little overwhelming when youre a kid, but then, what are kids but thinking, feeling adults-in-training? To hold two contradictory feelings at once is a very grown-up accomplishment, and movies often help us into that realm.. British critics reacted mainly with enthusiasm to Wednesdays premiere of the stage musical Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theater in London.
